Of all the absurdly ridiculous things that former Vice President Joe Biden has said throughout his political career, this one should be in the top ten. He recently called out Republican lawmakers who were in the U.S. Capitol building during the riot on Jan. 6 for – you guessed it – not wearing masks.
As The Hill reported,
At least four members of Congress have tested positive for COVID-19 since the attack by a pro-Trump mob last week. Some House Republicans were seen in holding rooms not wearing face coverings despite the pandemic.
Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.J.), a 75-year-old cancer survivor, was among those who recently tested positive. She blamed her illness on her ‘Republican colleagues’ inability to accept facts’ in a Washington Post op-ed published earlier this week.
The former vice president gave remarks on Friday calling on Americans to wear masks for his first 100 days in office. “He said he will sign an executive order to mandate masks where he has the authority to do so – such as on federal property – and ask governors and mayors to implement orders requiring masks. A number of states and localities already have such orders in place,” according to The Hill.
Biden then argued that wearing masks should not be a “partisan issue” and that it could save tens of thousands of lives. He said:
Look, I hope we now know this is not a political issue. This is about saving lives. I know it’s become a partisan issue, but what a stupid, stupid thing for it to happen. This is a patriotic act. We’re asking you, we’re in a war with this virus. And experts say and have shown that wearing a mask from now until April will save as many as 50000 lives.
The former vice president continued, lashing out at Republican lawmakers who were present at the Capitol building as it was being stormed by pro-Trump rioters. “Quite frankly, it is shocking to see members of the Congress while the Capitol is under siege by a deadly mob of thugs, refusing to wear a mask while they are in secure locations,” he seethed.
Biden brought up Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, who handed out masks as lawmakers were hiding from rioters. He criticized a Republican member of Congress who refused the mask. “What the hell’s the matter with them? It’s time to grow up,” he scolded, referencing the four Congress members who tested positive for COVID-19 after the melee.
The activist media and the left have been blaming Republican lawmakers for infecting these Democratic legislators with the virus, claiming that their refusal to wear masks while avoiding rioters who were clashing with police in the building. But there is more than one problem with the Democrats’ incessant whining about masks at the Capitol.
For starters, if the assault on the building was as harrowing as people like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) claim, nobody inside is going to be thinking about pandering to the face mask Nazis. AOC and her ilk were caterwauling about how their lives were in danger and how they almost died, and while there is still no evidence proving that the rioters were looking to kill politicians, it must have been quite frightening for those inside the building. Face masks would be the last thing most of us would be thinking about if we were in the same position.
Secondly, the claims that Republican lawmakers infected Democrats with COVID-19 seem to lack one important thing: Evidence. None of these people have proven that they were infected during the riots. Indeed, they could easily have contracted the illness before the event. The fact that none of the Republican officials who were present during the incident have tested positive for the virus suggests that Democrats are just using their diagnosis as yet another cynical political attack.
But, as we already know, Democratic politicians and their close friends and allies in the activist media are not concerned with truth; they are focused only on spreading their preferred narrative. Biden is only doing what these people do best: Make use of any occurrence that could redound negatively on conservatives. The question is: Will it work?
